Take a Book/Share a Book
Little Free Libraries inspire a love of reading, build community, and spark creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. Children growing up in homes without books are on average academically three years behind children in homes with books. One of the most successful ways to improve the reading achievement of children is to increase their access to books, especially at home. But 61% of low-income families do not have any age-appropriate books for their children at home.
Little Free Libraries play an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books (and encouraging a love of reading) in areas where books are scarce. There are currently over 75,000 registered Little Free Libraries in 85 countries worldwide and tens of millions of books are exchanged each year through these Little Libraries.
The Pebble Beach Company Foundation partnered with Rancho Cielo Youth Corps to build Little Free Libraries and put them throughout the community. The Pebble Beach Company Maintenance Team drew the plans for the libraries and mentored students from Rancho Cielo Youth Corps to build the Libraries. Each Little Free Library will be filled with new books with an emphasis on diverse children’s books for all ages (pre-school through middle school).
The Little Libraries will be located in several locations around the community to promote access to books, and we are excited to include the Pebble Beach Post Office. The Little Library located at the Pebble Beach Post Office has a mix of children’s and adult books.
Additional locations include Spanish Bay (Employee Parking lot, across from entrance to Inn at Spanish Bay), the Morse Townhomes, and two elementary schools in Seaside and Marina.
We hope you and your family will enjoy your Little Library, and welcome you to share some of your favorite books!
