Hy Rothstein

Dr. Hy Rothstein recently retired from the faculty at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He spent considerable time in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Philippines observing the conduct of those wars. Hy has written and edited books about Afghanistan including Afghanistan and the Troubled Future of Unconventional Warfare and Afghan Endgames – Strategy and Policy Choices for America’s Longest War. He also co-edited The Three Circles of War on Iraq, an anthology that explores the similarities between insurgency and gang violence (Gangs & Guerrillas), a comprehensive volume on deception titled, The Art and Science of Military Deception, and Assessing War, which addresses the challenges of measuring success and failure during war. He has also written several journal articles and op-eds on national security issues. Dr. Rothstein developed and taught courses on the strategic utility of special operations, military deception, psychological and political warfare, public diplomacy, and the media. A retired U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Beret) officer with combat award for valor, he earned his Ph.D. at Tufts University.
